Sportsmanship

Tennis Etiquette at BYC

The game of tennis is not only bound by its official rules but is also governed by a set of unwritten codes of conduct, collectively known as tennis etiquette. These conventions are crucial to maintain the respect, integrity, and enjoyment of the game for both players and spectators alike. Let’s come together, whether at BYC or any tennis court worldwide, to celebrate and uphold the values of good sportsmanship and passion for the game. Everyone wins when we play with respect and heart.

  • Celebrate and acknowledge your opponents’ commendable shots. This not only keeps the game’s spirit high but also fosters mutual respect.
  • Refrain from hosting loud discussions or post-game analyses that could disturb others or seem boastful.
  • Avoid showcasing displeasure with certain types of shots like drop shots or lobs.
  • Remember, it’s never in good taste to belittle or act condescending towards a less skilled opponent. Keep the competition friendly and enjoyable.
  • Keep conversations low-pitched when in the vicinity of active tennis courts. This ensures that ongoing matches aren’t disturbed.
  • Do not walk behind a court in the middle of a point. Always wait for a break in play before crossing, and do so swiftly.

Always bring essentials to the court, including balls, towels, and drinking water, especially during hot weather.

Opt for tennis-specific sneakers. Not only do they protect the court’s surface, but they also provide players with the necessary comfort and safety. Non-tennis shoes can deteriorate faster and potentially damage the court.

Ensure personal items like racket covers, cans, jackets, and other belongings are safely stowed and out of everyone’s path.

If you need to return balls to a neighboring court, always wait for their play to pause. Roll the balls onto the back of their court without interrupting their game.

  • Retrieve balls not only for yourself but also for your partner and opponents. It’s a small gesture that promotes camaraderie.
  • Always be supportive of your partner. Replace criticism with encouragement.
  • Make line calls audibly so your opponent can hear clearly. If the ball lands in, continue playing without uttering a word.
  • Always respect your opponent’s line calls. If a disagreement arises, the best approach is to offer a ‘let’ and replay the point, even if it involves a second serve.

Embody the essence of sportsmanship by praising your opponents for their excellent shots. The core of the game is respect, enjoyment, and the love for tennis.
