Sailing Lessons in Ottawa with CANSail - Recreation & Racing

Britannia Yacht Club’s CANSail program is open to sailors of all experience levels. If you have never sailed before or are looking to improve your sailing skills, these courses will help you develop your abilities and confidence. Classes are led by Sail Canada certified coaches who stress a practical approach to training, both on and off the water, with a fun atmosphere. Many of our sailors return for multiple sessions each season and make lasting friendships along the way.

CANSail 1
  • Dinghy: Europti, by Topper
  • Recommended Ages: 8 to 10
  • Duration: 2 weeks – Monday - Friday Full Day Program 8:30am-4:00pm. Drop off after 8:15am Pick up before 4:30pm
  • Participants: Maximum: 16 per session

CANSail 2

  • Recommended Ages: 10 to 13
  • Pre-Requisite: CANSail 1

  • Participants: Maximum: 16 per session

CANSail 3 & 4
  • Dinghy: Club 420
  • Recommended Ages: 13 to 15
  • Pre-Requisite: CANSail 2 or 3
  • Duration: 4 weeks – Monday to Friday Full Day Program 8:30am-4:00pm. Drop off after 8:15am Pick up before 4:30pm
  • Participants: Maximum: 8 per session
  • Sailors will have the option to attend local regattas, charged separately

Register for 2025 Learn To Sail

CANSail 5 & 6
  • Dinghy: ILCA 4, ILCA 6, 420s (Sailors in the ILCA class must provide their own boat)
  • Recommended Ages: 12-17
  • Pre-Requisite: CANSail 3 or 4 or meaningful racing experience
  • Duration: 10 weeks – Monday to Friday Full Day Program 8:30am-4:00pm. Drop off after 8:15am Pick up before 4:30pm
  • Participants: 8 Sailors or 6 boats
  • Sailors will attend 2-3 local regattas and also the CORK regatta in Kingston in August The CAN sail 5-6 program is an introduction to dinghy racing and is a pathway to eventually join the Laser (ILCA) race team. Sailors will be introduced to the basics of racing in a variety of wind conditions, and will develop a strong understanding of the racing rules of sailing.

Laser Racing Team: Space is limited
  • Coached by Nick Kim
  • Dinghy: Laser, provided by participants, must be competitive (Full, Radial or 4.7)
  • Recommended ages: 14-19
  • Pre-Requisite: CANSail 2 or other meaningful dinghy experience
  • Participants must weigh over 100 pounds for 4.7, over 110 for radial and over 145 for full rig
  • Two Fleets: High Performance and Development
  • Regatta coaching expenses are included in the fees for a set regatta schedule. Additional fees may be required for additional events

Opti Race Team: Space is Limited
  • Coached by Alastair MacIntyre
  • Dinghy: Optimist, provided by participants, some charters available
  • Recommended Ages: 8 and up. Participants age out of the Optimist Class the year they turn 15
  • Pre-Requisite: CANSail 1 or other meaningful dinghy experience
  • Sailors must weigh less than 120 pounds
  • Two Fleets: Championship & Green
  • Regatta coaching expenses are included in the fees for a set regatta schedule. Additional fees may be required for additional events

Additional Information:

Required Reading: Please read through our Sailor’s Handbook as it contains a great deal of important information to help prepare for the program, including “What to bring”.

Water Safety: Participants must be able to (a) swim 50 meters wearing a life jacket or personal floatation device (PFD); (b) tread water; and (c) provide their own properly sized life jacket or PFD approved by Transport Canada or the Canadian Coast Guard, Department of Fisheries and Oceans

Ages for Participation: The “Recommended Ages” for the program are a guide only. A participant’s skill level and size will determine which session they should be registering for. Please contact us if you are not sure which program is right for your child

Friday Pizza Lunch: Fridays are pizza days! This year the cost of pizza lunches has been included within the registration. On Friday mornings, participants can order either two slices of cheese, pepperoni or one of each. Juice box included.

Rowan’s Law: The BYC is serious about the safety of our sailors. In accordance with Provincial regulation (Rowan’s Law), sailors and their parents are required to acknowledge that they have read through the Provincial resources on concussions, as well as sign a concussion code of conduct, before they are able to participate in any of our programs.

Cancellation Policy

  1. No refunds after session start date
  2. Full refund if cancellation is prior to 30 days of session start date
  3. $100 fee for cancellations 30 days or less prior to session start date
