Hours of Operation & What to Bring

The Junior Club Learn to Sail Program runs every weekday from 8:30 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. Please note that each child must be signed in and out every day by a parent or guardian, unless he or she has written permission to leave the premises. The same protocol will be followed for leaving the grounds at lunchtime. If a sailor is going to be absent or late please let us know by calling Britannia Yacht Club at 613-828-5167.

As the children will be outside and, on the water, most days, it is important that they come prepared with gear for all sorts of weather. Essentials include a healthy lunch, water, a lifejacket, bathing suits, towels, sunscreen, hats, closed toed shoes that can get wet and a change of warm clothes. Please refrain from packing any food containing peanuts as some children may have allergies. Instructors will inform your child of any additional necessary equipment on their first day.

Please note that the Yacht Club is implementing a pack-in pack-out policy this summer. The use of Tupperware containers, which can be re-used, is highly recommended. The less garbage you bring to camp the cleaner the grounds can be at all times.

Tennis Lessons

Lessons are held on Tuesday and Thursday from 4:30 to 5:30 at the tennis courts by the main clubhouse. Please pick up your child at the tennis court gate at 5:30 after the lesson. Should the lessons be cancelled due to poor weather conditions, we will try our best to schedule a make-up lesson. Children will remain at the Main Club, with instructor supervision, for pick up if the lesson is cancelled.

Parking at the Junior Club

During the hours of operation of the LTS Program noted above, parking at the Junior Club will be restricted to the area behind the club house. The entrance will be roped off in order to provide a safe environment for the children, free of traffic.

Friday Pizza Lunch

Fridays are pizza days! This year the cost of pizza lunches has been included within the registration, so sailors may order worry free. Sailors can order two slices of cheese or pepperoni pizza with the choice of a can of pop or juice. Additional slices may be sold after every sailor receives their lunch however extra slices are not always guaranteed.

Can Sail 3 & 4 Sailors

Weather permitting the Can Sail 3 & 4 sailors will have the opportunity to camp overnight at the BYC property located at Baskin’s Beach (approximately 12 miles upriver). The exact date is to be determined, and further details will be provided to parents and sailors. If the Can Sail 5 sailors are not away at a regatta they may join the Can Sail 3 & 4 sailors for the overnight trip. If the weather does not cooperate on the scheduled date, the date of the Baskin’s trip will be changed to the following week.

Wednesday Night Racing

Students are encouraged to use Junior Club boats to participate in Wednesday night dinghy racing. The sailors will sign out a boat during the day by letting their coach know which boat they would like to use and who they will be sailing with for the evening races. A BBQ dinner will be provided for sailors on the Jr. Club grounds before racing begins. Wednesday night races begin at 6:15 and sailors will be leaving the harbour at 5:30. Parents are welcome to join the children on the water or watch the races from both the Jr. Club and Main clubhouse side.

Crewing on “Big Boats”

Keelboat owners at Britannia are eager to let the Jr. sailors have the opportunity to crew on their boats on Tuesday and Thursday race nights. The best location for pick up and drop off is by the gas pump. If your child is interested in this great experience, please ensure they have had dinner, and are waiting at the gas dock by 5:30 when the boats are leaving the harbour.

Contact Information

The contact information was collected with camp registration. If any of this information has changed or if there are alternate phone numbers where parents can be easily reached, please fill out a contact information form that is attached and return it to the Junior Club Office on the first day of camp. It is important to ensure that the mailing address is up to date since any leftover certificates will be mailed at the end of the summer. The instructors are looking forward to the promising summer we have ahead of us. We are especially excited to meet all the new sailors, as well as to greet those who are returning to spend another summer at the Britannia Yacht Club Junior Club. If you have any questions, issues or concerns about the program, please do not hesitate to speak to your child’s instructor. We would be more than happy to help in any way we can.
