Commodore's Corner

Commodore's Corner - March 2023

Welcome to Spring!

It may not feel like it this week, but Spring is here! Our High-Water Management Committee has been monitoring the water levels for the last couple of weeks and has no current concerns with high water levels. This committee was established in 2017 and meets as soon as the melt starts and continues until we pull the gates. Our hope is to have the gates pulled by mid-May – fingers crossed.

Our board meeting this month was very productive. Minutes for the February meeting are available for your review on the Members Only section of our website. While you are at the club, have a look at the board of directors’ picture frame. All the board’s pictures have been updated.

We received a proposal to form a new committee and I am very excited to announce that the Board has agreed to support the development of a Youth Members Committee. The members of this committee will be between the ages of 12 to 17. They will advise the board on what is important to our youth and how we can make the club more youth friendly. If you know of a young member who would be interested in participating, please have them contact me at commodore@byc.ca. We are currently looking to add 3 to 4 members.

All committees and their members have been approved by the Board, as per By-law 3 s12.1(a) and (c). The updated list can be found in the Members Only section of the website.

We are moving our official race notice board from its current location to outside Kimberley’s office.

Sail Canada has given direction to all of its provincial associations, including Ontario Sailing, that all clubs are required to implement the Safe Sport Policies that were developed with the input all national sporting associations. Over the next few months, the BYC will be implementing the following policies:

•         Code of Conduct
•         Protection Policy
•         Screening Policy
•         Social Media Policy
•         Whistle Blower Policy
•         Discipline and Complaints Policy
•         Appeals Policy
•         Dispute Resolution Policy

We will be starting with the Code of Conduct Policy and be providing you with updates as we move forward. If you would like more information about these policies, please visit https://ontariosailing.ca/member-services/safe-sport/ Scroll down the link to read the policies. Should you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to me.

In the next week, you will be receiving an email asking you to pick your top 3 choices from all the information we learned from our strategic planning sessions. This is the next step in creating the plan for your approval. We are looking forward to your feedback.

The Western Berm and the East Dam Wall continue to be priority projects going into 2023. As previously updated, we had Baird Engineering visit to do an initial consultation on the costing of an engineering report for the Western Berm and the East Dam Wall. Given the estimate that they provided, the board felt we should try and engage other firms in order to obtain comparative quotes. Unfortunately, the other firms from whom we requested quotes have either been unresponsive or have politely declined to respond. We are continuing to pursue other firms, and once we have a better idea of cost and scope, we will be providing you with a further update.

As always, we are happy to hear from you.  Please feel free to contact me, Paul Moore, or any member of the board of directors, with your questions, comments, or concerns.

Looking forward to seeing you at BYC.

Lisa
