November Commodore Corner

Dear BYC Members,

The summer season is coming to a close with the last of the warm days of sailing, regattas and tournaments, and a shift to the fall and winter social activities and events. Information about the fall and winter activities are being sent out regularly by the office and I hope to see you at one of the events.

A wonderful BYC 135th Anniversary Gala was held recently and I am proud to say the club raised $8,000 for the Youth Sailing program and another $3,000 in marine safety supplies were donated by Fox40. Our club has a strong history of volunteerism going back to the very beginning of the club in the late 1800’s. The event was an opportunity to shine the light on the many members who have throughout the years volunteered their time and energy to support the club. The Past Commodores received special recognition as did Guy Grimard and crew for their work on building the flood protection wall in front of the club house.

In October the club held two Town Hall meetings to provide members with information about the new not-for-profit legislation (ONCA) and the required changes to our Bylaws and Regulations. This will be followed by a General Meeting in the new year with the aim of approving the first round of Bylaw changes. A second round of Town Halls will occur in the new year as well.

As you may know from the media Ottawa has seen an increase in the number of covid cases with the move to more indoor activities. The covid committee continues to meet as needed to discuss the situation generally in Ottawa, the situation at the club specifically. We continue to encourage members and staff to take the protective actions that we know work, namely:
●   Use a mask when in large groups indoors
●   get fully vaccinated, the 4th dose of the vaccine is now available for every adult
●   if you are ill, please stay home and follow Ottawa Public Health guidelines regarding self-isolation, and
●   if you test positive notify people who you may have come into close contact with for the past 48-72 hours prior to testing positive

A new way to ask club related questions is being put into place; a dedicated email address …asktheboard@byc.ca…. has been set up so that you can get quick responses to your questions about the club.

Look to emails from the office for details regarding fall activities:

Wishing you and your loved ones a happy holiday season.

Regards,
